Matsya

Matsya
The first avatar of Vishnu, when in the guise of a fish he intervened to save Manu Vaivasvata, the Aryan, from the consequences of the Deluge.
Subsequently he destroyed Haya-Griva, an underwater demon who had stolen the Vedas. A possible earlier version of this story which appears in the Mahabharata makes the fish an incarnation of Brahma. The story of Manu follows the familiar pattern of Deluge legends. The main point of interest is its similarity to the Babylonian story of Oannes the Fish God. It may have been acquired from the Dravidians. The battles with Haya-Griva, Hiranyaksha, and his brother Hiranya-Kasipu may properly belong to this episode. The story is continued in the Kurma and Varaha avatars.
